A SCHEME has launched to help clampdown on the impact of ‘menace’ nuisance bikes and quads in a Bradford district town by restricting the sale of fuel to them.

Garage Watch has launched in Shipley, as part of the town’s Neighbourhood Policing Team’s commitment to reducing the impact of nuisance riders causing anti-social behaviour.

If the Shipley scheme proves successful, police say it will be rolled out elsewhere in the force area.

The scheme is looking for the support of all service stations in the Shipley area and each Police have called on service stations to carry out a series of steps to help make further progress in reducing incidents of fuel sales to people where it is likely they would be using fuel in vehicles to cause anti-social behaviour.

Garage Watch posters will be on prominent display in each participating service station.

The scheme would like its members to refuse sale of fuel to any illegal off-road motorbikes/quads or any other off-road vehicle.

Other steps include the removal of helmets, masks, scarves or anything obscuring the person’s identity while on the forecourt will be required.

West Yorkshire Police, Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service have all teamed up for the initiative.

Sergeant Terri Green, of the Baildon, Bingley and Bingley Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team, unveiled the plans to residents.

She wrote: “Whilst we cannot stop everyone from accessing fuel, we can certainly reduce the opportunities by working together and appreciating the impact this can have.

“I am really pleased to say each service station in the Shipley wards were very supportive of this initiative and were keen to join the scheme.

We will support each service station with priority patrols and robust investigation and prosecution of any reported incidents arising because of the support for this scheme

“Any service stations found to be supplying fuel to persons who then become involved in ASB or crime, we will look to gather evidence and consider enforcement.

“If this is a success in Shipley, we will look to roll out the initiative to other parts of the force.”
