A FORMER post office in Brighouse could be turned into a pub under the latest plans for the building.
The site on Park Street in the town is currently run as a restaurant known as The Office, but Amber Taverns wants to buy the property and open a pub instead.
It is not known at this stage what the firm would call any new pub on the site.
In a design and access statement accompanying the plans it states that if successful the prominent building would become a drinking establishment, using the ground and first floors as well as the courtyard area.
It states: “Our client believes that a pub is an important part of any community, as it offers a place for people to socialise and relax in an alternative environment to their home.
"The public house is very popular with the local community. Often the pub is one of the few places, which is inclusive to many areas of society.”
“The nearby residential area allows customers to walk to the site rather than driving to other pubs further afield which may already have a better appeal to customers, helping the immediate local environment and road safety issues which would in turn be improved whilst at the same time discouraging people from drink driving. A great local encourages people to spend their money locally to help this business and surrounding businesses succeed.”
In addition, it states that the final design will ensure improved facilities.
The plans themselves show a lounge and bar area on the ground floor, alongside a garden area with seating.
The first floor would also have a bar and seating area, along with a karaoke area and an office. The second floor would be two-bedroom accommodation for the manager of the new pub.
People have until June 16 to have their say about the plans, and a decision is expected by planners in July.
Property history indicates that there was a successful planning application to change the use of the ground and first floor of the building in 2018 into a restaurant.
The building itself is not listed although it is to the northwest of the Richard Oastler Wetherspoon’s pub, which is listed.
Amber Taverns operates The Drum Winder, Ivegate, Bradford; Library Tap, Main Street, Bingley; and Bow Legged With Brass in Halifax. The firm is currently seeking an operator for The Drum Winder.
