TEA parties, jazz bands, a floral Tower of London, a mini Royal carriage and a 'Design your own throne' workshop - these are some of the fun ways Bradfordians of all ages are celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
WHAT'S ON: List of events in Bradford to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend
A range of events are taking place across the district this week. On Thursday the Bradford Great Jubilee Tea in City Park is aiming to feature ‘the biggest cake stall in the north’, as well as world food, music and entertainment - and the lighting of the official Platinum Jubilee Beacon.
Five parks in the district are holding family fun days throughout the week, each featuring inflatables, a climbing tower, dance, arts and craft. Thursday is Cliffe Castle Park, Keighley (also there on Thursday is the In Motion: Keighley Transport Festival); Friday is Wibsey Park; Saturday is Lister Park (also Mind The Gap’s family-friendly show, Leave The Light on For Me); and Sunday is Roberts Park and Peel Park.
Schoolchildren have been celebrating the Jubilee in a variety of ways. At Reevy Hill Primary School in Wibsey pupils staged a Parade of the Decades, with each class representing a different decade of Her Majesty’s reign. Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Martin Love visited the school and is pictured below with ‘mini mayor’ Poppie-Rose Kelly-Wilcock. Strong Close Nursery School in Keighley held a garden party for families and planted a Jubilee tree. And at St Francis Primary School youngsters sang the National Anthem at a street party and planted flowers for a Tower of London Super Bloom.
Bradford Cathedral is holding Jubilee-themed free family activities tomorrow, 10am-12noon and 1-3pm, featuring crafts, quizzes,‘Design Your Own Crown’ and ‘Design Your Own Throne’. Visit bradfordcathedral.org
Whitelock Grange Retirement Living development in Bingley is inviting local people to join its celebrations “fit for a Queen” on Wednesday, 12-3pm. There will be afternoon tea and live music from the MPR Jazz Ensemble. Fiona Brooks from McCarthy Stone Northern, said: “Some of our homeowners remember the Coronation; our event will be an opportunity for them to get together, share stories and remember times gone by.”
Cancer patients have paid tribute to the Queen at Jubilee-themed watercolour classes. Cancer Support Yorkshire, which has centres in Bradford and Skipton providing practical and emotional support, holds art classes led by tutor Steve Davis. Nancy Lotze and Nicole Parker, who attend the classes, have painted portraits of the Queen for the Jubilee. Nancy and Nicole are hosting a Jubilee Celebration at the charity’s Smith Lane centre in Bradford on Wednesday, 3-5.30pm.
Bradford District Museums and Galleries Service have been combing the archives for photos and objects relating to the Queen, her Coronation and her visits to the district to create some fascinating displays celebrating the Platinum Jubilee. At Cartwright Hall, find out the Coronation’s key moment in the history of television. Over at Bolling Hall, discover royal connections with popular nursery rhymes. And at Cliffe Castle and Bradford Industrial Museum, learn about the Coronation and Royal visits. All displays run from Thursday to September.
City Library and Keighley Library are also displaying local items of royal interest, including news cuttings, photographs and memorabilia from special collections in the Local Studies Libraries. And Bradford Libraries are holding a range of events:
