A MAN has been banned from owning animals for two years after he and a woman admitted to mistreating several dogs and puppies.

John Lowther, of Kidacre Road, and Marina Lowther, of Westway, Farsley, appeared in Bradford Magistrates Court earlier this month.

Both pleaded guilty to four offences of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal on May 10.

The offences, which occurred at some point between May 13 and August 13 in Appleby, Cumbria, were all down to them failing to provide adequate parasitic control.

Those affected were Bella, a female black and tan German Shepherd, eight puppies and Ginger, a female tan border terrier.

Ginger was not given veterinary treatment for skin disease, while three of the puppies ended up with pruritus and dermatitis.

Marina was not banned from owning animals because she was only temporarily caring for the dogs.

John was handed a 12-week prison sentence which was suspended for two years.

The 44-year-old must also pay a victim surcharge of £128 and £85 in court costs.

Marina was issued with a community order.

The 42-year-old was fined £80 and has to pay a victim surcharge of £95 and £85 in court costs.
