Comedian Sophie Willan has let a swearword slip out live on stage at tonight’s BAFTA Awards ceremony.

During her acceptance speech for the Female Performance in a Comedy Programme Award she accidentally said “Holy s**t” before quickly apologising for the blunder.

Willan picked up her gong for her appearance in BBC Two sitcom Alma’s Not Normal, which follows the eponymous Alma as she attempts to give her life meaning while reconciling with the time she spent in the care system.

BAFTA viewers complain about BBC censoring

Taking place before 7pm, Willan’s swearing breaks the strict rules about what can be shown on TV before the 9pm watershed.

Unsuitable material includes everything from sexual content to violence, graphic or distressing imagery and swearing.

Viewers have since hit out at the BBC for not censoring Willan’s swearing while cutting parts during clips of It’s A Sin, a Channel 4 drama depicting the lives of gay men and their friends.
