A BRADFORD restaurant is battling to be named Britain’s best Indian takeaway on a new TV show.
Sweet Centre Restaurant, based on Lumb Lane, Manningham, is one of five restaurants looking for the title of the best Indian on BBC Two’s ‘Britain’s Top Takeaways’.
The show, broadcast on Tuesday, May 10, is one of a 10-part series presented by Radio 2 host Sara Cox and comedian Darren Harriott.
Waqar Mughal and Hamayun Arshad, from the Sweet Centre, battled it out against representatives from four other restaurants for the crown of best UK Indian restaurant.
Each of the five restaurants had to make takeaway dishes which were sent and rated by members of the public, who ate them at their respective homes.
The Sweet Centre and the other representatives also have to impress the show’s guest judges; players from Manchester Village Spartans Rugby Club. The challenge was filmed in Manchester in summer 2021.
Mr Mughal, chef and manager at the Sweet Centre whose grandfather set up the business in 1964, did not disclose how they got on in the show but revealed it was a great experience to test themselves against fellow South Asian restaurants.
Mr Mughal was nicknamed Waxi on the show, while assistant chef Mr Arshad was known as Mio.
Mr Mughal said: “It’s humungous for Yorkshire and for us.
“It was a great experience for us to be on the TV. It was a remarkable experience. It was incredible.
“It was very intense with the time constraints.
“We have contributed a lot to the city since we opened in the early 1960s.
Sara and Darren were really fun to work with. Sara is a northern lass and knew all about Yorkshire curry
“There were quite a few places and food that we needed to make food for. We had to make some starters, main course, vegetarian dishes and sundries.”
It is not the first time the Sweet Centre has been in front of the television cameras.
Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman and TV chef Ainsley Harriott visited the restaurant for their BBC daytime show Len and Ainsley’s Big Food Adventure in 2015.
‘Britain’s Top Takeaways’ will be shown Monday to Thursday at 8pm on BBC Two between May 9 and 19.
The themes of the eight-part series will see the following takeaway types battle it out; fish and chips, Indian, burgers, friend chicken, pizza, Mexican, kebabs and noodles.
