DRIVERS are facing MONTHS of delays on the M62 due to a safety upgrade.
Officials say drivers can expect chronic delays at peak times due to roadworks on the M62 between junctions 25 and 30.
The roadworks to upgrade the motorway and make it safer for commuters won't be finished until winter.
An absolute nightmare - Freddie K
Road users have been advised to plan their journeys and avoid travelling at peak times.
Monique Kibara, National Highways Project Sponsor, said: “We have started work to improve safety on the M62 between junctions 25 and 30, starting with the upgrade of a 1.7-mile section of safety barrier around junction 27 from steel to concrete.
“Safety is always our top priority. Once completed, the upgraded barriers will improve journeys and significantly reduce the risk of vehicles crossing over from one carriageway to another, improving safety and reducing the duration of incident-related congestion.
“Work is expected to be completed this winter. In the meantime, we are doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum, but we advise road users to plan their journeys and avoid travelling at peak times if possible. I want to thank everyone for their patience while we carry out these vital safety improvements.”
Until then drivers are advised to plan accordingly and factor in long waits at peak times.
But some drivers are already expressing their frustration.
Reader Freddie K said: "The M62 is reduced from 4 lanes to 3 for roadworks so this is what you get. Just shows the level of traffic passing through the 26-27 corridor and how effective 4 lane running has been. It will continue for the next 5 months. Absolute nightmare for all using it. I still haven't seen a single sign of any work being done."
