Free fruit trees are being given away to residents on a Bradford housing estate.

More than 250 households on the Canterbury estate can choose to have a small apple, cherry or flowering fruit tree for their garden under the green scheme by Bradford Community Housing Trust (BCHT) and the Forest of Bradford.

The Co-operative Group has backed the project with a £3,000 grant, and during the next three weeks, BCHT workers will visit homes and hand out leaflets to promote the tree scheme.

Staff from the Forest of Bradford, a charity dedicated to increasing the number of trees grown in rural and urban areas, will help young people from the area to plant the trees, which grow to six or seven feet tall.

Ian Simpson, assistant chief executive of BCHT, said: "BCHT is committed to encouraging tenants and local groups to take pride in their surroundings and our annual Home and Garden show is just one of the ways we help."
