Police incident caused severe delays on major Yorkshire road this morning after a man fell from a bridge.
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "Officers have been in attendance at the A1M between Junction 35 and Junction 36 this morning (Wednesday 27 April).
At about 5.10 am we received a call from a member of the public reporting concerns for the safety of a man on the bridge over the A1M at Junction 36.
The man fell from the bridge and sadly died. Yorkshire Ambulance Service is also at the scene, and formal identification is yet to take place.
The A1M remains closed in both directions between Junction 35 and Junction 37 at this time while emergency services continue to work at the scene. The bridge, the junction between Warmsworth Road, High Road, and the A1M, is also closed. Updates as to the road closure will be made in due course via the usual channels."
Congestion was reported to J35 (M18 Interchange) heading North and also back to J27 (Marr) heading South.
South Yorkshire Police tweeteed, this morninig: "The A1M Southbound carriageway is currently closed at Junction 36 due to a road traffic collision. Delays are expected on both northbound and southbound carriageways. Please plan your route and avoid the area if you can."
