A drink-driving dad injured his teenage son and his friend when he crashed his car after going through a red light and speeding at up to 100mph.

Makhan Aujla, 49, who had bought the Renault Laguna the same day, by his own admission drove like a maniac after drinking nearly a bottle of red wine.

Bradford Crown Court was told today Aujla drove from his home in Leeds Road, Eccleshill, Bradford, with his 17-year-old son in the front passenger seat.

A second son and another teenage boy were back seat passengers.

Prosecutor Heather Weir said Aujla drove through red traffic lights in Bolton Road and accelerated away.

He reached a speed of 100mph and when he braked the car swerved from side to side, then mounted the kerb, hit a road sign and came to a halt after hitting a lamp-post.

One son had glass in his hair and another passenger suffered head injuries and went to hospital for treatment. But Aujla walked home where he drank a bottle of strong lager.

Police attended and he was found to have at least 112 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80.

Aujla pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, being over the prescribed limit, driving without insurance, failing to stop after an accident and failing to surrender to police custody.

Judge Robert Bartfield told Aujla it was "an absolute miracle nobody was killed".

The judge jailed him for 12 months and banned him from driving for three years.

Ray Singh, in mitigation, said Aujla had started consuming vast amounts of alcohol after losing his job in the textile industry. He said that while the driving was dangerous it was only for a short period.
