A FISH and chip shop owner has spoken of his frustration over long-running roadworks outside his business.

Shane Palmer runs Parry Lane Fisheries, on Sticker Lane, said he is losing around £1,000 per week because of the disruption.

He said he'd been told the works, for the new Parry Lane Enterprise Zone project, would last for three months but the ongoing disruption is causing a "nightmare".

"I'm losing about 40-50 per cent of my takings due to these roadworks," he said.

"I'm using savings, it's just a nightmare. I've had enough of it. It's affecting us massively."

Mr Palmer said people are avoiding the area due to the works and if they have half an hour for a lunch break, they won't want to sit in traffic.

Like many other businesses, the shop struggled due to the Covid pandemic.

"We were getting back on our feet, they put all these roadworks on us," he said.

To add to Mr Palmer's misery, double yellow lines are also due to be put outside his shop, with a section of Parry Lane made one way.

It comes at a time when there are concerns over the future and fish and chip shops.

The National Federation of Fish Friers recently said they expect one third of fish and chip shops to go out of business due to the cost of electricity and ingredient prices.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: “The new £8m Parry Lane Enterprise Zone project transforms a derelict brownfield site into a modern commercial space which will attract much needed investment and jobs.

“The new enterprise zone will offer parking for customers using the shops and services on Sticker Lane, and pedestrian islands and a pedestrian crossing will improve safety and better walking routes to the local shops.

“This is a joint project between West Yorkshire Combined Authority and ourselves and colleagues have been in contact with businesses in the area and written letters informing them of developments and updates.

"Signage signalling that businesses remain open have been offered. Unfortunately, the project has been delayed by complexities caused by existing utilities and access restrictions.

“The works outside the fish and chip shop will be complete around April 20 with the overall scheme is programmed to be finished at the end of May.

“We understand developments like these cause some inconvenience, however, once complete they deliver significant benefits to local people.”
