Two England football legends who lifted the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966 are appearing at the home of a reviving Bradford football club.

Bradford Park Avenue AFC is on a mission to reclaim the Football League status it was deprived of 38 years ago.

As the team looks to achieve the four promotions needed to reach its goal, the appearance of World Cup final hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst and fellow winner Jack Charlton is a major boost.

As part of the club's bid to reach out to the community and expand its fan base, they will be watching children show off their shooting skills at the team's Horsfall stadium.

School teams will compete against each other to strike as many footballs as they can through a series of holes.

The highest scorers will claim a share of £1,000 prize money and afterwards all participants get their team picture taken alongside Charlton and Hurst.

It is 20 years since Park Avenue were reformed, 14 years after it went into liquidation.

Kevin Hainsworth, a club director, said: "There are an awful lot of people in Bradford that don't know we exist and this is the start of us addressing that.

"Children are the future. You'll find that the current supporters are the ones who were here when we were last in the Football League, we've lost a generation.

"So we are trying things to get children involved, by showing them what a great time they can have here, and hopefully getting them hooked."

He said he was proud to have the support of two World Cup winners.

"It is a fantastic realisation of what we are doing. In English soccer they don't come much better than these two, so to get them down to a club that is not even in the Football League is excellent."

Park Avenue was established in 1907, competing in the Football League between 1908 and 1970 before its financial undoing.

When it returned it was forced to work its way up from the lowest tier of non-league football, in the West Riding County Amateur Football League.

Massive change has swept through all aspects of the club recently. Bradford businessman Bob Blackburn was appointed chief executive and the ground has been transformed with seats from Lord's cricket ground.

Mr Hainsworth said the club was keen to attract more youngsters to get involved with its 15 junior teams, representing every age group between four and 19, as well as its three women's teams.

The Bradford Park Avenue £1,000 Challenge takes place at the Horsfall stadium on Saturday from 11.45am, ahead of the team's match against Bridlington Town.

The winning team will be presented with a trophy on the Horsfall pitch by Charlton and Hurst at half-time and the pair will be signing photographs for £20 each.
