A well-used trans-Pennine road has been blocked this evening after an accident.
A heavy goods vehicle left the carriageway on the A635 Greenfield Road between Kirklees and Saddleworth earlier today. The large vehicle came to rest in a ditch, with its front end embedded in the undergrowth.
One motorist, who was trying to get from Holmfirth to Tameside, said recovery work was still ongoing at around 6.30pm and a police car was parked sideways across the road.
"It looked like the recovery trucks were at work on the scene and a police car was parked across the road turning traffic back," said the motorist.
"It looked pretty serious," they added.
Driving conditions have been hazardous over the tops today, with dense fog, rain and strong winds.
The incident has happened on the section of road between Wessenden Head Road and Dovestones Edge.
