Firefighters were called to a flat fire in West Bowling.
One crew from Odsal attended the fire at Lindsey Court in New Cross Street at 3.40am yesterday.
Two men and a pregnant woman were in the flat, but had managed to put the blaze out before the crew arrived.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service said the fire had been caused by someone smoking near a mattress which had ignited.
