A TEAM of selfless Bradfordians will help the people of Ukraine by driving across Europe to distribute urgent supplies.

Scott Lee and partner Kate Bennett set up a GoFundMe page following the Russian invasion, which has so far reached over £1,600 of its £5,000 target.

The money raised will be used to fill vans with food and medical supplies, and the couple will be joined by Nick Procter, Charlotte Fisher and Adam Sutcliffe, who collectively will do “as many trips as possible” to support those in the war-torn country.

Scott, who is from Bingley and a plumber by trade, said the team want to do whatever they can amid the “heart-breaking” situation.

Kate, who is of Ukrainian descent herself, added that she is “proud” of the work they are doing.

“When you see what’s going on in Ukraine, you just want to help in any way you can”, said Scott, 31.

Scott and Kate run the Mirror Mirror on the Wall beauty salon in Baildon, and said they are receiving so many donations that the salon is “filled to the ceiling”.

“It’s amazing how many people are wanting to help”, Scott added.

“We’re going to drive all the way to Ukraine, we’re hoping to have two lads in each van.

“We are looking for people who want to drive vans or sort through the donations. We have a few people helping, but the more the better.”

Kate is following in the footsteps of her parents – who, over 30 years ago, did the same trip as Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union.

“My grandad was from Ukraine and in 1991, my mum and dad took supplies there”, said Kate, 41.

“It’s sort of like we’re carrying on from then.

“I still have family in Ukraine, who are going to help translate when we make the trip.

“We’ve been lucky as most of our family have managed to leave and flee to Poland and Germany.

“It’s awful – we shouldn’t have to be sending food parcels to people in this day and age, it’s ridiculous.

“I met an old man in Otley who donated £400 – that doesn’t usually happen, but that was his way of helping.

“Packing these boxes brings a smile to everyone’s face. We don’t do it for that reason, but it is nice to make others smile.”
