A judge locked up a night-time housebreaker caught prowling Bradford in a stolen car.

Michael Boyle, 22, was arrested wearing gloves and sunglasses at 3.25am, a court heard.

Boyle, a three-strikes' burglar who qualified for a three-year prison stretch, was jailed for 876 days.

He pleaded guilty to burgling a house in Goole, East Yorkshire, on June 27 last year and stealing handbags, a purse and car keys.

Boyle also admitted taking a £10,000 Toyota car from the drive and attempting to enter a house in Drover's Way, Bradford, with intent to steal.

Prosecutor Duncan Ritchie told Bradford Crown Court that Boyle was caught in Bradford the same night as the Goole raid. Police saw the Toyota driving slowly in Drover's Way with no lights on.

Boyle was wearing sunglasses and gloves and had part of the lock barrel from the Goole house in his pocket.

The targeted home in Drover's Way, with a sports car on the drive, had its back door lock removed by the time police challenged Boyle.

Another man arrested two days later was caught with pliers forensically linked to the properties, Mr Ritchie said.

Boyle has 46 previous convictions for 77 offences, including two burglaries.

Gerald Hendron, Boyle's barrister, said he had spent 142 days in custody. He did not enter either house and had made positive progress in prison on remand.

Judge Roger Scott jailed Boyle for 876 days and said his time on remand would be taken into account.
