THE chairman of the Bradford Ukrainian Club and many other local fundraisers have strongly welcomed the Telegraph & Argus' #ThereWithUkraine campaign, which launched today.
With Ukraine coming under attack from the Russian invasion, different races, cultures and communities in the city have pulled together to show their support for the Eastern European country.
On Monday, people keen to offer refugees shelter could register their interest through the Government’s new humanitarian scheme, with the process of matching Britons with people fleeing the conflict taking place from tomorrow.
The Homes for Ukraine programme will allow individuals, charities, community groups and businesses to bring people escaping the war to safety.
Those offering will be vetted and Ukrainian applicants will undergo security checks.
Figures show Bradford is already home to almost 2,000 people believed to have fled conflict or faced persecution in other countries.
Director of The Bradford Ukrainian Club, which has stood tall on Legrams Lane since 1948, Ewhen Chymera, said: “There is a lot of interest in people wanting to sign up to the scheme. We have been inundated with requests.
"Bradford Council has tasked us with making sure any Ukrainians who end up in the district are supported beyond what they can offer - in terms of language, faith, and Ukrainian schooling.
"I am not aware of any refugees currently in Bradford. I don’t think we will see people arriving in the UK until the back end of next week, if not even later. It will be a couple of weeks before we start seeing Ukrainians en masse.
"Millions have been internally displaced. They have moved to the western cities whilst they are relatively safe. So while that remains the case, we may not see a massive upturn.
"I have spoken to family in the West recently and they are finding it difficult to explain to their children why they have to take cover every time a plane goes overhead or a siren goes off. The war has not changed, we are still seeing horrific stuff.”
Another person in full support of our campaign is Magdalena Timmins.
