SPY cameras and new fencing could be installed at a fly-tipping hotspot to catch and deter offenders who persistently target the site.

The problem hotspot, opposite the allotment on Queens Road, has recently been piled high with everything from mattresses to electrical appliances as well as general rubbish.

Bradford Council admitted it had been a problem for several years and revealed that it had removed dumped waste on numerous occasions.

There have even been reports of brazen fly-tippers threatening well-meaning members of the public who have tried to intervene.

The council has been out to the site on several occasions and removed the waste, but it is now looking for more effective measures to tackle the problem such as CCTV cameras.

An elderly cancer patient, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she had found an ‘enormous amount of comfort’ in her plot since her diagnosis.

She said: “I was at my plot, and I saw a woman fly-tipping, so I ran to tell her off, that she couldn’t just dump her things here and she threatened me.

“I no longer feel safe being at my plot alone and I really enjoy going there. It’s a massive distraction from my life and cancer, it just lets me get on with life.

“Had there not been a gate up, the fly-tipping would have fallen into my plot and ruined my plants.

“I’ve raised the issue with the council several times and nothing got done, it’s been like this since last August and the situation seems to be getting worse and worse.

“I just want to visit my plot and spend time with my plants and the fruits and veg that I’m growing.”

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: “The Council is aware of fly-tipping at the allotment which has been an ongoing problem for a few years. The site has been fly-tipped and has had waste removed on a number of occasions.

“Officers from Bradford East Area Coordinators Office are working with the Environmental Enforcement Team and Neighbourhood Wardens to identify funding to clear the waste, fencing to be erected and the installation of CCTV to identify offenders and prevent further fly-tipping.

“If you see fly-tipping taking place, please note down as many details as possible, including vehicle licence plate numbers, and inform the Council. Fly-tipping can be reported by calling the Council 01274 431000 or online at www.bradford.gov.uk”.
