HIGHWAYS officers from Bradford Council are in discussions with police about reducing speed limits on Moor Road and Hangingstone Road in Ilkley.
The speed limit has been reduced to 30mph on the road within the Shipley constituency however, it is 50mph within the Keighley and Ilkley constituency.
Police have been monitoring the reduced speed limit and recently issued six speeding tickets in one enforcement operation.
Councillor Gerry Barker (Con, Wharfedale) successfully campaigned for the installation of a restricted speed limit and road humps along Moor Road at Woodhead which was expanded through Burley Woodhead towards Menston which proved very successful in slowing down traffic and improving the road safety of residents and users.
Following several incidents along Moor Road at Stead Cllr Barker received further complaints which he again brought to the attention of the Council's Highways Department and a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was made in July 2020.
Cllr Barker said: "Funds to undertake the work to implement further road humps and speed restrictions were approved, but work was delayed due to the Covid pandemic. The speed restrictions have now been implemented, but work has not yet been instituted with regard to the requested road humps.
"With specific regard to the speed limits on Moor Road, the finance for the work was provided by the Shipley Area Committee and the work was authorised via a TRO to occur within the boundaries of the Shipley Constituency. This is why the change in the speed limit to 30mph expires at the Shipley - Ilkley constituencies boundary along Moor Road. The change in speed limit is quite clearly defined and there are regular repeater speed restriction signs along the Moor Road at Stead.
"With regard to the change in speed limits from the Shipley boundary towards Ilkley, along Moor Road and Hangingstone Road, these are also quite clearly defined. My colleague, Cllr Kyle Green, District Councillor for Ilkley, is presently in consultation with the Council’s Highways Dept for a similar speed restriction change along this road within the Keighley and Ilkley constituency."
A Bradford Council spokesperson, said: “Officers from the council have been in working with the police to look at the speed limits on Moor Road in Ilkley and they will be meeting with them on site again next week to discuss this.”
Sergeant Shaun Leeson of Ilkley Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Local residents have raised concerns with us about speeding throughout the Ilkley area.
"To date we have conducted a number of speed enforcement patrols across the ward area including Bolling Road, Moor Road, Cowpasture Road and Leeds Road.
"Speeding is one of the fatal 4 offences and part of the #WYPTheCost campaign. We are working with our roads policing unit to keep our roads safe."
