FIREFIGHTERS were called to a flat fire in Ilkley yesterday at 7.28pm.
Seventy-five per cent of the flat in Ben Rhydding Drive was involved and there was a risk of the fire spreading to surround flats in the block.
Fire fighters from Ilkley, Otley and Silsden attended. Crews used six breathing apparatus, three hose reels, one large jet and a high powered fan to extinguish the fire and rid the properties of smoke.
No rescues were carried out, although one occupant was treated by fire crews with oxygen, and then by ambulance crews for smoke inhalation. Smoke detectors were fitted and working at the time of the incident.
A spokesperson for Ilkley Fire Station said: "The fire was well developed on arrival with difficult and very hot conditions inside, however thankfully the initial BA team of Crew Commander Thompson and Firefighter Kiers managed to get on top of the fire before it worsened.
"One person had self rescued prior to our arrival and all persons accounted for after thorough enquires. Ambulance attended and took over casualty care, however the occupant did not need hospital attendance and was thankfully unhurt.
"Otley and Silsden along with a watch manager from Rawdon assisted to bring the incident to a close.
"Well done to all involved in what was a challenging job, and thank you to the residents nearby for the refreshments - very much appreciated."
