BRADFORD West MP Naz Shah has condemned violence against police officers after two were assaulted in Girlington at the weekend.
Footage emerged of the incident in St Leonard’s Road at 5.54pm on Saturday, in which a man appeared to punch an officer a number of times before standing over him shouting.
Four males were arrested in relation to the incident and one man has been charged with two counts of assaulting emergency workers and will appear in court in a fortnight.
Following the incident, Bradford West MP Naz Shah described the people in the video clip as a “bunch of thugs”.
She said: “Last night (Monday) I spoke with the District Commander Rob McCoubrey regarding this callous attack on the officers.
“I’d like to thank the police for their swift enquiries which led to the arrests of individuals.
“I’m also pleased to hear both officers who were injured were back on duty yesterday which is no doubt further indicative of their commitment to public service and keeping our streets safe.
“There is no place for abuse of police officers doing their jobs here or anywhere. Police officers risk their lives to keep our communities safe.
“Those convicted of this sickening crime should face the full force of the law, without any let offs.”
After the incident, police said that Zahoor Hussain, 36, of St Leonard’s Road, Girlington, has been charged with the alleged assault of two emergency workers and a further count of an alleged public order offence.
He was bailed and is due to appear at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, March 24.
Another man, aged 25, was dealt with via an out of court disposal for his role in the incident, and two other men are on bail pending further enquiries.
Anyone who witnessed the affray or who has information about the incident is asked to call police on 101 quoting crime reference number 13220120596, or use the live chat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website.
