A 14-year-old boy caught behind the wheel of a car in December has been handed six points on his licence, three years before he is even eligible to hold one.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, was caught on December 20 in Bradford behind the wheel of a Ford Focus.

He was charged with driving without a licence and driving without insurance, and he pleaded guilty to both offences in a hearing at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates's Court on Monday, February 21.

For the offences, magistrates handed him a six-month conditional discharge and his driving record was endorsed with six points.

In the UK people cannot hold a provisional or full driving licence until they are 17-years-old, meaning the boy - who was 13 when he committed the offences - has points on his record three years before he can legally get behind the wheel.

He was also handed a £17 surcharge to fund victim services, which his parent or guardian will have to pay.
