FILMING is underway today in Bradford for the new series of global Netflix hit The Crown.

Streets around Canal Road and in Little Germany have been transformed into 1990s Moscow for scenes for the fifth series of the hugely popular television drama, starring Imelda Staunton as the Queen, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Dominic West as Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.

Bradford Council closed roads near Forster Square, including parts of Canal Road, Valley Road and Holdsworth Street, for filming early today, ahead of more filming at Little Germany.

Residents and businesses have received letters informing them about the filming.

David Wilson, director of Bradford City of Film, said: "We have seen increase in requests for film and TV locations in the past six months at the Bradford Film Office as production across the UK is booming.

"Bradford has established a solid reputation as a film friendly city and of course we have such a great variety of locations. Added to that this is very much a team effort with support from the highways department, parking services, countryside and rights of way team, parks and landscapes at Bradford Council.

"There are of course economic benefits of having all these productions in town in terms of coffees, hotel stays etc then in the longer term there is screen tourism and many people who are interested in locations where the likes of Peaky Blinders have filmed."

The Crown is the latest high profile production to be filmed in Bradford. Other productions filmed in the district over recent years include Netflix series The English Game, Peaky Blinders, Gentleman Jack and the first Downton Abbey film.
