STORM Eunice is set to hit the Bradford district tomorrow, threatening high winds and snow – but is it actually going to snow?

A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office covering the entire Bradford district tomorrow for Eunice’s arrival, lasting from 3am to 6pm.

This includes the risk of a foot of snowfall on higher ground and a couple of inches at low levels, with high winds bringing the risk of blizzards and snow drifts.

The warning speaks of “disruption due to heavy snow and some strong winds” with delays and disruptions on the roads, railways and in air travel, the chance rural communities could be cut off, and risk of power cuts.

The Met Office adds: “Snow, heavy in places, is likely to develop on the northern side of Storm Eunice as it moves across the UK on Friday.

“There is still uncertainty in the track of Storm Eunice and not all areas within the warning area are expected to see snow. However, some places may see around 5 cm of snow at low levels away from coasts.

“Accumulations are expected to be significantly higher over hills though with 10-20 cm perhaps up to 30 cm possible above around 250 metres.

“Strong winds occurring at the same time may lead to very poor visibility, blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow.”

But is it actually going to snow in Bradford?

Currently the forecast says, for Bradford, probably not. It’s more likely to just rain through the day, which will be particularly grim when accompanied by 29mph winds and 58mph gusts.

There’s a small chance of snow from 6pm to 8pm. Temperatures are staying just above freezing through the day, but with wind chill will feel more like -4°C.

Up in Queensbury snow looks more likely, with sleet in the early morning before high chances of heavy snow from 1pm on Friday all the way through until late on Saturday. This is set to be accompanied by 34mph winds and 60mph gusts, making it feel a bitterly cold -7°C all afternoon.

In Shipley, as well as Bingley and Keighley, the outlook is similar to Bradford with very little risk of any snow. Up in Ilkley there’s a slightly higher chance of snow but it still looks unlikely.

Everywhere in the district it’s set to be absolutely freezing, blowing a gale and probably raining – or in Queensbury’s case, snowing – quite heavily due to Storm Eunice.
