POLICE in Bradford are warning people to be vigilant after reports of banking customers being contacted by people pretending to be police officers.

In one of the incidents earlier this month, someone who claimed to be a police officer - and carrying what was said to resemble a warrant card - turned up at the customer’s house following a telephone conversation with them and took photos of their passport.

No money was lost on this occasion, but Bradford District CID has issued an urgent warning to people in the district to be wary, as enquiries continue to identify those involved.

PC Toni Hinnells, said: “We would never call someone to discuss an issue with their bank account, nor send an officer to someone’s house for these reasons.

“If you receive one of these calls then please hang up and contact your bank separately. They should be able to confirm if there is suspected fraudulent activity with your account.”

“Should someone call at your house saying they are a police officer and you are not sure if they are genuine, then please ask for their collar number and surname and call 101. Real police officers will not mind waiting while you check their details.”

Anyone else who believes they have been targeted in this way is asked to contact police on 101, or 999 if the crime is taking place at that time. 

Suspicious callers can also be reported to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
