The torrential rain which overwhelmed much of the Aire and Wharfe valleys on Monday has taken its toll on the region's canals, says British Waterways.

Staff have been working flat out to repair damage to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal throughout the week.

Badly hit was the Skipton area where Eller Beck, which flows through Skipton town centre, and the Springs section of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, converged in a torrent, above.

Laurence Morgan, British Waterways general manager, said: "Where possible we are continuing to lower the water levels by closing flood gates and sluices but everywhere is up to and beyond capacity."

Staff are continuing to work with the emergency services to improve the situation for the worst affected areas, he added.
