LATEST NEWS: Police reveal road will be closed for 'a while' to secure bridge lorry crashed into

A LORRY has had its roof ripped off after hitting a railway line bridge.

The crash happened on Mill Lane, in the Broomfields area of Bradford, between Gordon Street and Fitzwilliam Street.

West Yorkshire Police was called to the scene at 12.38pm.

A lorry was reported to have struck the bridge between those roads, which has a railway line atop it, heading in and out of Bradford Interchange Railway Station.

It was first reported at 12.43pm, according to the AA.

The vehicle suffered extensive damage, with the roof of its trailer completely stripped off and the back of it bent inwards.

Our reporter at the scene, Mark Stanford, said there was no visible damage to the bridge and nobody was injured.

But police have since said the bridge is having to be secured.

Mr Stanford added that the top of the vehicle's trailer had come off as it went under the bridge.

The lorry, which is from Bulgaria, looked to be carrying bags containing a non-hazardous white substance, which had spilled into the road.

The crash caused temporary chaos on the railways.

Northern Rail announced at 1.28pm that all services running through Bradford Interchange were being cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes due to the crash.

It then said 12 minutes later (at 1.40pm) that all lines had reopened.

The collision partially blocked the road, but traffic was believed to be coping well.

Police officers were at the scene and West Yorkshire Police has now told the T&A Mill Lane will remain closed for "a while".
