The dark stretch of road where 12-year-old Amy Howard died in a road accident could soon be lit with solar powered lights.

Amy died when she was struck by a Honda CRV in December, 2005, while trying to cross the A65 Addingham by-pass from a bus stop to her home in Crossbank Road.

The driver, Alison Dewhurst, was cleared on Tuesday of careless driving after the court heard the area of the bus stop, a few hundred metres on the Skipton side of the Silsden Road roundabout, was dark.

Amy was wearing her dark school uniform, and the court heard poor weather made visibility even worse.

Despite the recommendation of Bradford Coroner Roger Whitaker, and the fact Amy was the only child killed on Bradford's roads in 2006, Bradford Council ruled out installing lighting in the area.

Now highway bosses say they are looking at ways to illuminate the scene. A Council spokesman said: "Due to the lack of electricity cables in the area we are investigating installing a solar powered light to highlight the bus stop."

The news was welcomed by Jonathan White, of the Ilkley Road Safety Committee. He said: "That would be excellent. I have made approaches to Bradford Council since the accident about the possibility of lighting on that stretch."
