A BRADFORD MP has described the leader of the country as a "lame duck Prime Minister" and criticised the drinking and partying culture in 10 Downing Street.

The comments come on the back of the release of Sue Gray's report update yesterday, which has heaped pressure onto Boris Johnson.

Ms Gray's update listed 16 events across 12 dates, which she has looked at in her investigation into alleged gatherings on Government premises during Covid restrictions.

A dozen of the reported gatherings are also under investigation by the Met Police, meaning Ms Gray - a senior civil servant tasked with undertaking the investigation after cabinet secretary, Simon Case, stood down in mid-December after allegations about his own conduct - is unable to release the full report at this stage.

But the published update has still led to an explosive response from MPs, from opposing parties and within the Conservative camp itself.

Many have called for Boris Johnson's head and Bradford South MP Judith Cummins is one of those.

She said: "The Prime Minister needs to go.

"This isn’t about wine, cheese or cake. It’s about trust and leadership.

"Under this Prime Minister, we have had a government focussed on covering up events over the pandemic."

Ms Gray's first general finding was that some of the behaviour surrounding the listed gatherings was "difficult to justify", given the Government was asking members of the public to "accept far-reaching restrictions on their lives".

The report update states: "At least some of the gatherings in question represent a serious failure to observe not just the high standards expected of those working at the heart of Government but also of the standards expected of the entire British population at the time."

It also mentions that the excessive consumption of alcohol is inappropriate in a professional workplace at any time, not just during a pandemic.

Ms Cummins raised particular concerns with this aspect and how it shows a disregard for people's sacrifices.

She said: "The reality is there has been a culture of drinking and partying in Number 10 and it shows a complete lack of care for the hardships that have been faced by the public through this time of national crisis.

"If the Prime Minister can’t be trusted to tell the truth about this, he cannot be trusted to run the country.

"He’s a lame duck Prime Minister, and if his MPs continue to prop him up it’s the country that will suffer."
