THE POST OFFICE in Steeton is due to close in March as the current post master has resigned.
Post Office Ltd confirmed the pending closure on Friday, 21 January, as residents took to Facebook to voice their concerns, after seeing a planning notice in the shop window.
A spokesperson for Post Office Ltd said: “The Postmaster for Steeton has resigned and the branch is due to close in mid-March. An alternative Post Office is Eastburn.”
Concerns have been raised for elderly residents as the nearest post office will be a 20 minute walk away.
Cllr David Mullen, Chair of Steeton-with-Eastburn Parish Council said: "Steeton has quite a high demographic of older people. When the post office goes, the post box goes too, which is another issue for residents really. We wanted to object to the closure but post offices like that can just go.
The post master can say they've had enough and the business goes. What we're left with is a pie shop which is open three days a week and the Co-op. We're just going to be a dormant village with the way it's going "
Cllr Mullen added that residents would like another post office, but it's up to Post Office Ltd to find someone.
