RESIDENTS and councillors have reacted with shock after a "lovely" and friendly" man died from injuries when he was hit by a car.

The incident happened on Leeds Old Road, Bradford, this morning.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "We were called at 6.42 by the ambulance service to reports a vehicle was in collision with a pedestrian.

"The pedestrian, a 57-year-old man, was taken to hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

"The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is helping police with enquiries."

People were asked to avoid the area while police investigated and a cordon was in place until 2.10pm.

The spokesperson added: "There have been no arrests at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or use the live chat facility at westyorkshire.police.uk/contactus quoting log 196 of January 21."

Residents at the scene said the man was travelling back from morning prayers when the accident occurred.

"It's very bad," said Thornbury resident Josef Ahmed. "The guy who was hit is disabled and he's a very nice man.

"Everybody around here is very upset about it."

"I know him well," said Ali Rehman, owner of Ibrahim Foods on Leeds Old Road. "He comes into my shop.

"He's a very nice person. He was just coming back from morning prayers when the accident happened.

"I'm very shocked," said Mr Rehman.

Turning to more general road safety concerns in the area, he added: "This road is only 30mph but some people go 80mph or 90mph."

Thornbury resident Rubiy Khan also pointed to wider concerns over driving standards, saying: β€œIt's horrendous how people drive. It's too frightening to walk around here."

Another local resident said: "It's very sad. He's a lovely guy. I've known him for many years."

Cllr Riaz Ahmed (Lib Dem, Bradford Moor) said: "The circumstances of the crash are very unfortunate.

"He's not only my neighbour but he's a very nice chap.

"My heart and prayers go out to his family.

"It's very upsetting. He's a very friendly man and no-one would have a bad word to say about him.

"It's very shocking for the community.

"These accidents are happening too frequently.”

Cllr Zafar Iqbal (Lab, Bradford Moor), who knows the resident and his family, said: "It's tragic this accident has taken place.

"It's very sad news for the community.

"My thoughts are with the family at this difficult time."

"A 65-year-old man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries and he remains in hospital in a serious condition.

"The car was travelling at some speed, it was very early in the morning and was dark so this individual never stood a chance.

"Speeding around here has been highlighted in the past. It has to be looked into. These people where the cameras, so there needs to be intervention by police.

"These accidents are happening too frequently.

"These people drive at such speeds. It's a hobby to them but they don't think about the consequences.

Cllr Zafar Iqbal (Lab, Bradford Moor), who knows the resident and his family, said: "It's tragic this accident has taken place.

"It's very sad news for the community.

"My thoughts are with the family at this difficult time."

"The police are not taking action. They come to this area many times.

and Leeds Old Road remains closed at the junction with Killinghall Road.

The road reopened at 14.11 and a man remains in hospital in a serious condition.

A BRADFORD road is closed this morning following a crash on Leeds Old Road where a man suffered serious injuries.

West Yorkshire Police tweeted: "West Yorkshire Police are currently in attendance at a serious road traffic collision on Leeds Old Road in Bradford.

Residents in the area have reacted with shock to the incident, telling the T&A that the injured man is a much-liked gentleman who is a valuable part of his local community.

In a separate incident last night, a pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car on Shipley Airedale Road in Bradford.

"The police are making their enquiries."

Cllr Iqbal said that speed has been a problem on Leeds Old Road for many years.

"The police are working on it and a lot of work has gone it."

Leeds Old Road is closed by police at its junction with Killinghall Road
