SHIPLEY Town Council has written to Wilko bosses asking what can be done to prevent the chain from closing its store in the town.
Wilko on Kirkgate will shut for good next month, one of 15 of the high street chain's branches to do so, the company has confirmed.
A firm spokesman says it has briefed its team members in Shipley of the decision to close the store at the end of its lease in February unless more favourable terms can be agreed with landlords.
A Shipley Town Council statement said: "We have written to the head office of Wilko and Bradford Council, seeking to understand the reason for the proposed closure and anything that can be done to save the shop, which is a much-valued facility in the town.
"The Town Council deeply regrets the loss of the business and the impact it will have on staff, customers and the town centre in general.
"The Town Council welcomes any comments that members of the public might wish to make on this matter, which can be sent to the Town Clerk (shipleytownclerk@gmail.com)."
