BRADFORD-BORN author Abda Khan and Bradford resident poet Sharena Lee Satti are staging an event capturing memories of growing up in Bradford in the 1970s.

The pair have been busy over the last few months with a project entitled ‘Jumping the Middings’. They delivered creative writing and poetry workshops to participants in order to explore and preserve their memories of growing in Bradford in the 1970s, in the form of creative writing and poems.

This is a unique project, inspired by Abda’s memories of jumping the middings/middens - tops of coal sheds in the back yards - as a child growing up in BD3 in the seventies. The project has evoked poignant memories for the participants, and gives a great insight into how different childhood was in the seventies.

After the successful sharing of the work at a virtual event, Abda and Sharena are now gearing up to bring the creative pieces to the stage. There will be a performance at Kala Sangam in Forster Square, Bradford, on Friday January 21, at what promises to be an evening of pure seventies nostalgia. This will stir many memories for those who grew up in the 1970s, as well as be an engaging way for youngsters to learn about this part of the culture and heritage of Bradford from this period in history.
