THE closure of a major store in Shipley is a big blow to the town, according to one of its councillors.
Wilko on Kirkgate will shut for good next month, one of 15 of the high street chain's branches to do so, the company has confirmed.
A firm spokesman says it has briefed its team members in Shipley of the decision to close the store at the end of its lease in February unless more favourable terms can be agreed with landlords.
Cllr Martin Love (Green, Shipley) says he is shocked at the planned close, adding it always seemed a well-used store.
He says Wilko's closure in Shipley will have a knock-on effect impact on other traders in Shipley.
He said: "It's a bit of a shock as it seems a well used store.
"It is in a prime town centre location. It will be a big blow.
"As a store, it has always functioned well.
"It has broadly replaced Woolworths because of the range it sells. It does a wide range of things.
"It is the only place in Shipley town centre selling a lot of those things.
"It is a big shame to lose it and it will have a big impact on other retailers in the town.
"I hope that the site can be re-let fairly quickly, so it does not stand empty for too long.
"It is one of the biggest units in the town centre."
