Heavy rain and flash floods have put emergency services on red alert across the district, with the road closures, train delays and flood watning chausing chaos.

A spokesman from West Yorkshire Police appealed for people to show extra care in the wet conditions as they worked hard to minimuse disruptions.

"The situation continues to be monitored and police are working with partner agencies to ensure there is as little disruption as possible.

"May we remind motorists to take extra care whilst using the road networks across the county."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service said there had been wide spread flooding across the area with the worst areas in Huddersfield and Wakefield.

The spokesman said severe flood warnings were in place for the River Colne and the River Calder.

The Environment Agency (EA) has issued warnings for several areas, with particular concerns about the Rivers Aire and Calder after rainfall of 30 to 50mm (one to two inches) of rain was forecast.

Mark Tinnion, regional flood risk manager for the EA, said: "Some flooding is likely to happen in the region, but at this stage it is not thought to be as widespread or significant as the summer floods.

"We have been monitoring the situation very closely and we are starting to patrol areas at risk."

A spokesman for Bradford Council said the A65 between Addingham and Ilkley and the A629 at Denholme were closed, and flood warnings were in place for the River Aire at Apperley Bridge, Baildon (Charlestown) and Shipley (Hirst Wood).

The council were also sending out sandbags to areas which were hit worst.

Rail services were also severely disrupted by the floods.

A spokesman from Metro said: "As well as flooding caused by heavy rainfall overnight and today, flash flooding is affecting services and stations, including Shipley and New Pudsey.

"Short-notice cancellations should be expected."

The spokesman warned people that extra care should be taken when entering and exiting trains, as platform edges would be slippery.

In Calderdale, a number of schools have been closed, including Shelf Junior and Infant School.
