A SUITE of measures will be introduced on a busy road in the district in a bid to boost safety.

Police and Bradford Council have agreed on a scheme for Bradford Road, Bingley, close to Beckfoot School.

It includes altering the crossing, reducing the speed limit and changing the layout of the road. The school recently issued a warning after two pupils were hit by a van while they attempted to cross.

Just two years ago, a sixth form pupil at the school, Ishah Iman Riaz, tragically died in a collision on the same stretch of road.

In a letter to parents following the latest incident, headteacher Simon Wade appealed to parents to speak to their children about road safety.

He said he asked tutors to speak with students about what happened and “the need for us all to be more careful and vigilant when crossing any road but especially one as busy as Bradford Road”.

Mr Wade added: “I want to remind them that they are precious to you and to us. Their safety matters and indeed little else is of importance if that is not right.”

A road safety programme will begin next month.

“This will take the form of an assembly in school. In addition, we will have an increased presence on Bradford Road to support students using the crossing safely.  Ultimately, students must take responsibility for their own safety and be incredibly careful especially in the winter when the evenings are short, it is dark, and students are often difficult to see,” he said.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed emergency services were called to the scene on the afternoon of December 13 and took a 13 year old and 14 year old to hospital with minor injuries.

Inspector Craig Stothers, of the Shipley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Our officers are continuously proactive in ensuring that we are doing what we can to keep the roads across the district safe for everyone.

“Our team carry out regular checks in the area and we are working alongside partners to make the road safe for the school pupils.

“We have met with the council and agreed on a scheme whereby the crossing will be altered, the speed limit beyond the school will be reduced for traffic in both directions and there are plans for the layout of the road to be changed, so we can improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.”
