Detectives hunting a callous gang of car thieves who left a pensioner for dead after mowing him down have arrested a teenager.

The 68-year-old victim suffered serious injuries, including a broken pelvis and lacerations, when he was struck by a car which was driven at him as he tried to chase the thieves.

The pensioner was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital and then transferred to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, where he remains in a poorly condition.

His injuries are not life threatening and he has been able to give a statement about the incident to police officers.

The incident happened in Queen Street, Gomersal, shortly after 2am last Sunday.

A gang of three men broke into the man's house and stole his car keys. He gave chase but two cars returned to the scene and one of them was driven at him.

One of the cars has now been recovered, partially burned out, in Bramley, Leeds, and a 17-year-old youth from Bramley has been arrested. He was questioned and released on police bail pending further inquiries. Investigations are continuing to trace the rest of the gang.

Detective Inspector Phil Benson, of Dewsbury CID, said: "This was a very nasty offence which could have turned out much worse. This is a priority inquiry and we are working with detectives in Leeds in a cross-border operation."
