It will be strangely quiet in Bradford schools on Friday.

Students will be giving their teachers a welcome bit of hush as they take part in Macmillan Cancer Support's annual fundraising event for schools - The Big Hush, a sponsored silence.

Young people of all ages are getting involved from Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College to Clayton Village Primary School.

Last year schools in and around Bradford raised more than £3,500 to help people affected by cancer and this year it is hoped to do even better.

The event comes at the end of the Macmillan's Cancertalk Week which aims to get young people aged seven to 16 talking about cancer in schools.

By getting involved in lessons and activities during the week and taking part in a story writing competition, children can find out more about the disease and help reduce the fear surrounding cancer.

Charlotte Stern, Macmillan's community fundraiser for the area, said: "People may be surprised that we're asking children to raise money for a cancer charity, but cancer affects more than one in three of us so many local children will know someone living with cancer or may even have been diagnosed with cancer themselves."

Money raised by The Big Hush will go directly to Macmillan who provide the practical, medical, financial and emotional support which makes a real difference to people living with cancer.
