A woman has spoken of her heartbreak after her dad lost his three-day battle for life after a collision with a motorbike.

Neil Slater, 64, died after suffering multiple injuries in the collision in Bradford Road, Shipley, just minutes after he had left his home in Wensley Avenue.

Doctors at Bradford Royal Infirmary told his daughter, Caroline Shields, 41, and her sister Sharron, 38, of Bingley, to fear the worst as they held a vigil at their father's bedside following the accident on Monday. Mrs Shields, of Ash Croft, Wibsey, said: "When I heard what had happened I just broke down into tears. I phoned my husband up to pick me up and we went straight to the hospital.

"They said he would be lucky if he lived. They told us it was touch and go right from the very beginning. They said by rights he should have died at the scene. It was only his toes that weren't hurt."

Mr Slater, a grandad-of-three, was pronounced dead at Bradford Royal Infirmary after his life support mach-ine was switched off on Thursday.

Mrs Shields said: "I am just crying and I can't stop crying. My sister is just in her kitchen, making cups of coffee. We just both have a feeling of numbness."

Mr Slater was a popular man and well-known around Shipley and Bingley, said his daughter.

He was also a hard worker and a caring granddad, to Dominic, six, Christopher, eight, and Daniel 15, who Mr Slater would watch play football every week for a team in Bingley. "He was just one of the lads. He liked a laugh and was well-liked by everybody," Mrs Shields said.

"His grandsons are very upset. Daniel is very quiet. He is 15, so he understands it all. His granddad used to go and watch him play football every week in Bingley. They always lost but he was always there.

"He will be sadly missed by a lot of people - family and friends."

Liz Cull, purchasing manager at the headquarters of window company Safestyle UK in Eldon Place, Bradford, worked with Mr Slater for eight years.

He had been employed at the building, which was previously occupied by office supplies company ISA International, for more than 20 years as a caretaker, handyman and chauffeur for the then managing director, she said.

Mrs Cull paid tribute Mr Slater.

She said: "Neil was a lovely guy and the number of people asking about him since we heard about what had happened has been unbelievable.

"He worked as an assistant storeman. He was such a popular member of staff and a main pin in the company, because he made sure everybody got what they needed."

Mr Slater was wearing a high-visibility vest when he was involved in the collision with a 41-year-old motorcyclist from Keighley. The rider also suffered injuries in the crash but they are not believed to be life-threatening, a police spokesman said.

Mrs Shields appealed for any witnesses to the crash.

She said: "If anyone has any information please come forward because we have got no answers. All we know is that my dad was in an accident with a motorbike. Somebody must have seen what happened."
