THE owner of a country pub in the Bradford district has hit out after her family, which includes an 11-week-old baby, were left without power in "freezing cold" conditions.

Strong winds from Storm Arwen brought down power lines across the Bradford district, including Oxenhope. And some properties there are still without power.

Claire Atkinson-Hall, who owns The Waggon and Horses Inn on Hebden Bridge Road, Oxenhope, said: "It's been an interesting few days. We lost power around 3.30am on Saturday. Although we had to cancel all our bookings, that wasn't the issue for us.

"We were waiting it out because Northern Powergrid originally said they would have the power back on by 3.45pm on Saturday, but they kept pushing it back. But it was absolutely freezing and so cold, and we had an 11-week-old baby with us.

"It was the worst snow we've seen in a while.

"I really felt for the workers who were out there fixing the power lines in the dangerous conditions."

However, Mrs Atkinson-Hall said: "The communication (from Northern Powergrid) has been appalling.

"I understand the comms team was overwhelmed, but we couldn't plan what we were going to do because we had to wait. After saying 3.45pm, they then said midnight on Saturday, then midnight on Sunday and midnight on Monday. We did eventually get power back between 8pm and 9pm last night.

"We were a priority service with an 11-week-old baby but we couldn't get through to them.

Rod Gardner, Northern Powergrid’s major incident manager, said: “All of our teams are continuing to work extremely hard to restore power to our customers. We still have some work to do in the North and West Yorkshire areas.

“We fully understand and appreciate peoples’ growing frustrations and we are very sorry for the continued impact to our customers’ lives and we thank them for their continued patience and understanding.”

Bradford Council said Northern Powergrid has informed them that there are still around 200 properties in the Bradford district without electricity.

Areas currently still affected include parts of BD1, BD13, BD15, BD20, BD21, BD22 and LS29

A spokesperson from Bradford Council said: "We have continued to work with residents, volunteers, partners and councillors to identify and support vulnerable people who have been affected.

"Council neighbourhood wardens have been out door to door identifying vulnerable residents and will be back out tomorrow if the power is still not restored."
