A bank in Bradford is holding an event to celebrate Diwali this week.

On Thursday 4th November, the UK’s community bank, Metro Bank, will celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, by handing out complimentary oil lamps called diyas.

Denis Charlotte, Bradford Metro Bank’s store manager said:"As a community bank, we pride ourselves on celebrating with our local communities,"

“Diwali is a sparkling event celebrated by many religions. Last year, we distributed 1,000 barfi sweets and this year we will be sharing over 1,400 diyas with our customers. We wish you a Diwali that brings happiness, prosperity and joy to you and your family.’

The word Diwali means ‘row or series of lights’. Diwali is one of the most well-known Hindu festivals – recognised by other religions as well - and families across the UK will be celebrating over the five day festival.

Just as fairy lights are traditionally used to celebrate Christmas, diyas are the traditional lights used for Diwali, as they represent enlightenment and are used to brighten up and decorate homes during this special festival.

Metro Bank is known for its family-friendly approach to banking and prides itself on supporting the local communities it serves by organizing seasonal events throughout the year such as charity events, fundraisers and networking events for local residents.

The diyas will be handed to customers during our store opening hours. Metro Bank’s Bradford store is located at 5 Market Street Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD1 1EG. The store is currently open Monday – Saturday 08:30am - 6pm. Sunday: 11am - 5pm.
