A COURT heard how murder-accused Savannah Brockhill wanted to change Star Hobson’s name and said she was the toddler’s parent, not her biological father.
Bradford Crown Court was also told on Friday how she wanted to “block Frankie Smith’s family from going to Star’s funeral” and bury Star next to her mother’s grave.
Giving evidence, half-sister of Brockhill’s co-accused Frankie Smith, Jade Smith, also told the court she heard Brockhill say “we’re going down for murder” and claimed Brockhill was telling Smith what to say in describing how Star died.
Taking the stand, Ms Smith said she had tried to be a go-between for Smith and Brockhill and Smith’s family after their relationship broke down after Anita Smith made a referral to social services regarding the care of Star in May 2020.
She described how when Smith met Brockhill, her “personality changed, and she started to talk like and dress like a traveller”.
She also said how it was suggested to her by Smith that “we are thinking of changing Star’s to Mary-Kate”.
Giving evidence later on Friday, Holly Jones said that early in their relationship Brockhill “would say Star wasn't Jordan's, she was hers, and she wanted to change Star's last name to Brockhill”.
Ms Smith also said she was told by Yvonne Spendley – Frankie Smith’s mother – that there were plans to bury Star “next to Savannah’s mum, and that Frankie’s family weren’t allowed to be there”.
The day of Star’s death, Brockhill called Ms Smith and gave her explanation of Star’s death, how she’d been in the kitchen and Smith was in the toilet and she heard a bang and found Star on the floor in the bathroom looking winded, before slipping unconscious and paramedics being called.
The next day, she said she had a call from an account belonging to a member of Brockhill’s family, and it was Smith on the phone – her phone had been surrendered to police.
Being questioned by prosecutor Alistair MacDonald QC, Ms Smith said: “It was Frankie, with Savannah in the background.
“Frankie said she felt numb.
“I asked what happened. I could hear Savannah in the background. It sounded like she was telling Frankie what to say.
“I heard Savannah say that ‘we're going down for murder’. Frankie said ‘shut up’ like she was scared.
“Frankie also said she thought Savannah might have hurt her doing CPR.”
Mr MacDonald asked: “You are CPR trained and are confident the doctors would be able to tell if injuries had been caused by CPR or something else?”
She replied: “Yes definitely.”
The trial continues from 10.30am today.
