A DERELICT petrol filling station will become one of the first specialist electric vehicle charging stations in Bradford.

Bradford Council has granted planning permission for the conversion of the long empty Bowling Bridge filling station on Wakefield Road into an EV charging station with an on site shop and car wash facilities.

The proposals, by the MFG Motor Fuel Group, would see 10 rapid charging points built on the site.

A similar application was refused earlier this year over concerns the shop would sit on top of a sewer access point. The plans were re-submitted in September with a relocated shop unit.

The plans said the station would help meet the need created by the “increasing number of electric vehicles on the road.”

Planning officers approved the plan last week, saying it would: "assist in the city's mandate to reduce pollution levels across the city by facilitating the transition to electric vehicles."

Last year an application to build a drive thru coffee shop on the site was approved, but the development never went ahead.
