Bradford Council has received a £5.8 million Government windfall to increase the short breaks it provides for disabled children and their families.

The authority is one of 21 pathfinder councils across the country to receive a share of £370m from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) over a three-year period to fund mini-breaks for disabled children and give families and carers time off.

The windfall will also allow the authority's Children and Young People's Partnership to ensure disabled children can attend youth clubs, mainstream children's holiday schemes and after-school groups. There are also plans to extend the range of services provided for children with complex health needs and those with autism.

Additional funding has also been directed to Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust so it can work with the Council to increase services for children with disabilities, complex health needs and terminal illnesses. Councillor The Council has pledged to consult with families on the sorts of short break services they would like and will host a special event at Bradford City FC's Valley Parade stadium on Tuesday, March 18. All parents of disabled children are welcome. Contact the Disabled Children Information Service on (01274) 431776 for further details.
