A ROAD safety campaigner says an inquest into a crash which killed four men in Bradford brought back painful memories of his own’s son’s death in a car accident seven years ago.
Murtza Chaudhry, 21, and passengers Arbaaz Hussain, 21, Zeeshan Khalid, 20 and Tayyab Siddique, 22, all died when their car crashed into a tree on Toller Lane in 2018.
Mr Chaudhry was driving a grey BMW at speed down Bingley Road just after 5.30am on Thursday, August 2, 2018, with Arbaaz Hussain in the front passenger seat, Tayyab Siddique in the rear off-side passenger seat, and Zeeshan Khalid in the near-side passenger seat.
The inquest concluded that Mr Chaudhry died as a result of misadventure, while his three passengers died as a result of a road traffic collision.
Campaigner Amjad Malik called for an end to dangerous driving on Bradford roads and says this fatal incident had similarities to the car crash which killed his own son in 2014.
Saliq Malik, 15, died from severe head and neck injuries after the Volkswagen Golf GTi in which he was a front seat passenger slid out of control in Gilpin Street, Barkerend, Bradford, on the morning of September 12, 2014.
Syam Khan, then 17, who was an uninsured driver, fled the scene as Saliq Malik lay dying in the wreckage - returning only to pick up his mobile phone in a bid to avoid being traced.
Khan was sentenced to four years youth custody when he appeared at Bradford Crown Court in April 2016.
Mr Malik, who has been campaigning for road safety in Bradford since his son’s death, says the inquest into the four men’s fatal crash started just the day after the seventh anniversary of Saliq’s death.
He called on people, particularly young men, to drive safely on the Bradford district’s roads.
Mr Malik said: “It’s a tragic incident where four young lads passed away.
“It brought back memories of my son and other accidents from the past.
“It’s quite shocking with drugs and drink being involved.
I just want young lads to drive safely on the roads, rather than risking their lives and other people’s lives
“It’s happening every single day. I’m always reading about accidents.
“I did go to the accident scene in Toller Lane just after it happened and I knew they were doing 100mph. I could see the speeds they were travelling at.
“Even though there are speed cameras on that road, they are not bothered.”
Mr Chaudhry was twice the drink drive limit and had taken cocaine and cannabis at the time of the crash, an inquest held in Bradford heard earlier this week.
Video footage of the BMW travelling at more than 100mph during a police pursuit moments before crashing into a tree.
All four men were pronounced dead at the scene, their deaths sending shockwaves around the community and city.
Mr Malik added he knows first-hand the grief the families of the four men are going through and that time does not make it any easier.
He said: “I really feel for the family for losing their kids at that age. They must have had a bright future ahead of them. It’s ruining their families lives as well. What is inside me is not going away. I can feel what they are going through.”
