FAMILY films are being screened in a range of venues in Bradford, including a market and a nightclub, throughout August.

The Bradford Family Film Fiesta is a month-long celebration of movies, from classics like The Railway Children to a series of animations in Urdu about the adventures of a female superhero, Burka Avenger. The diverse range of film titles will be shown in some unusual settings, as part of Bradford’s Summer Unlocked programme of events.

Screening locations include Bradford Big Screen in City Park, a pop-up cinema space in the Oastler Shopping Centre and Market, several community cinemas, and a rock music venue.

As well as Disney favourites such as Moana and The Lion King, there’s chance to see the beautifully shot, thought-provoking Irish animation Song of the Sea and awarding-winning Arabic language film Wadjda. There will also be regular screenings of Super Power Dogs in Imax 3D.

David Wilson, Director of Bradford UNESCO City of Film, said: “I am delighted that we’re able to bring such a brilliant range of films to screens across the district throughout August. The team at Bradford City of Film have worked with a range of partners and volunteers to curate a programme which we hope will empower and inspire young minds but also be fun and exciting.

“We have strived to ensure that all screenings are free or subsidised, in keeping with our mission as a UNESCO Creative City to ensure that everyone, whatever their financial situation, can access cultural offerings like this dynamic range of film titles.

“They include the award-winning Wadjda, the first feature by a female Saudi Arabian director - critically acclaimed Haifaa Al Mansour. The film was Saudi Arabia’s Oscars nomination in 2014 and charts the fortunes of a 10-year-old girl who enters a Quran reading competition to raise money to buy a bicycle.

“There will be a special screening of School of Rock in the Night Train nightclub, which is more used to the pounding sounds of heavy metal and rock bands, and a pop-up cinema at the Oastler Shopping centre will screen a series of animations in Urdu, following the female super hero Burka Avenger, by special permission of the creators of this animation series developed in Pakistan.

“On Bradford Big Screen there’s Moana, the hilarious Ralph Breaks the Internet, while every Thursday in August families will have half-price entry to see Super Power Dogs in Imax 3D at the National Science and Media Museum.”
