PLANS to build housing on the site of a former Victorian orphanage habe been withdrawn by the developer.

Last year a planning application to build 11 large homes on the former site of the Joseph Nutter orphanage, off Cousen Road, were submitted to Bradford Council by Opulent Land Developments.

The orphanage, near Horton Park, was built in the 1880s, and despite its grand appearance was not listed, meaning it could be demolished.

The application had said: “It is desirable that the site is brought back into active and beneficial use to avoid it becoming untidy and uncared for, which could be detrimental to the setting of the park and, to a lesser extent, the conservation area."

The proximity to the park led to Yorkshire Garden Trust writing to Bradford Council to say the plans were an overdevelopment of the site, and would harm the park's setting.

There had been seven objections from the public to the plan.

Now, well over a year after first being submitted, Bradford Council has been notified that the developer has withdrawn the application.
