ALMOST half of the biggest blazes West Yorkshire Fire Service dealt with in a 12 month period took place in the Bradford District.
This included the biggest fire the service dealt with in years - the huge tyre blaze on Spring Mill Street in November.
Next Thursday West Yorkshire Fire Authority will hold its annual general meeting, and will be given a report into the service’s performance between March 2020 and April 2021.
The report includes details of all the fires attended by at least six engines. In the 12 month period the report focuses on there were 20 such incidents - down from 22 the previous year.
Of these 20 fires - nine took place in the Bradford District, and these included the two that led to the biggest responses - the tyre yard fire and a blaze at a warehouse that is thought to have been turned into a cannabis factory.
The Bradford District fires included:
A barn fire at Heights Lane in Silsden on April 21, 2020. It was attended by 10 engines and 66 firefighters, and was found to have been caused by a child playing with fire.
An industrial fire at Waldo Engineering, Water Lane, on June 29 - attended by eight engines and 56 firefighters. The cause has not been determined.
Two arrests over fire at suspected cannabis factory
A blaze at Platinum Limousines on Peace Street on July 3 was dealt with by eight engines and 46 firefighters. Fire investigators were unable to determine the cause.
A suspected arson at Burger Time on Great Horton Road on September 14 saw 34 firefighters called to the scene.
The Spring Mill Street fire, which saw hundreds of thousands of tyres burn for days, started on November 16. It is thought the blaze was started deliberately, and the Service has said that while at its height between 90 and 100 firefighters were at the scene, almost every firefighter in the service was likely involved in dealing with the fire at some point.
A warehouse fire in Annison Street on January 3 was the second biggest fire in West Yorkshire in the 12 month period, with 14 engines and 78 firefighters called to the scene. The cause was said to be an electrical fault - and a cannabis farm was found in the fire ravaged building.
An electrical fault is also thought to be the most likely cause of the huge fire that spread through the Jaamiatul Imaam Zakaria school on Thornton View Road on January 23. Six engines and 38 firefighters braved icy conditions to deal with that fire.
On February 28 six engines and 40 firefighters were called to the Oxford Bingo Club on Dudley Hill Road after a suspected arson.
And an overheating vehicle causing a fire in a warehouse at Old Corn Road, Silsden on March 19 led to six engines and 40 firefighters being called to the scene.
