COUNCILLORS have spoken of their concern after a woman sustained multiple injuries in an "unfortunate accident" in a fall from a rock at Shipley Glen on Tuesday.

The Bradford woman, who was in her 60s, lost her footing and fell 20 to 30 feet from a rock at a viewpoint overlooking Eldwick.

She suffered head, hip, leg and hand injuries and was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary.

Cllr Valerie Townend (Cons, Baildon) said: "It's terrible and sounds like a tragic accident.

"I've lived here 53 years and it's the first time I've heard of an accident on the rocks there. I'm very sorry for the woman and her family.

"It's an unfortunate accident but it is something that would be worth looking into from a safety point of view.

She said the local beauty spot is very popular with dog walkers and rock climbers, who regularly practice there in full climbing gear.

"They're very good for climbing. There are few places where people can go to practice rock climbing."

Cllr Debbie Davies (Cons, Baildon) shared her concern for the lady who had fallen and said she hoped it was a "one-off accident".

"I wish her a speedy recovery," said Cllr Davies. "Hopefully it was just a one-off, freak accident."

She said there was a lot of talk and speculation about the incident on social media before details emerged about the accident.

"That is a a spot that people know very well," she said. "It's always a popular spot and is a really nice walking area.

"People like to climb the rocks around there and I always see people with climbing equipment.

"Parents do have be careful when they take their children up there and you should always take care in whatever you do."

"It's just one of those things, it was an unfortunate accident," added Cllr Mike Pollard (Cons, Baildon). "It's not an inherently dangerous or hazardous place.

"Without knowing the full circumstances of the incident, it was an unfortunate accident in a local beauty spot.

"There are some extremely steep bits in Shipley Glen and obviously care needs to be taken."
