A MAN who led the police on a high-speed chase while driving while disqualified for the ninth time has been jailed for 14 months.
Basit Khan was pursued through Castleford and back towards Bradford on the M62 in a blue BMW 320 he was not licensed or insured to drive.
Khan, 24, of Pemberton Drive, Bradford, ignored police orders to stop when he was spotted in Castleford at 9.15am on April 27 last year.
Prosecutor Jade Edwards told how he sped off down Redhill Drive and Ferrybridge Road and went the wrong way down a dual carriageway.
Khan reached speeds of up to 70mph in a 30 zone during the pursuit that went through the town centre.
Officers lost sight of him but information suggested he would be heading to Bradford, Miss Edwards said.
He jumped numerous red lights in the pursuit and a stinger device was used, the court was told.
Khan was seen again on the M62 at Junction 26 before abandoning the BMW and hiding in a container yard.
He then denied that he was driving the car or had even been in the vehicle at the time.
Khan pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving but was brought to court from custody last week to admit the offence.
On December 29 last year, he was jailed for 12 weeks for driving while unfit, Miss Edwards said.
After serving that sentence he was held in prison for a further two months on remand for the dangerous driving.
Khan’s solicitor advocate, Nicholas Leadbeater, said he was a changed man since the birth of his daughter in September last year.
‘It caused him to reflect and he now appreciates that his view on driving was nowhere near what it should have been,” Mr Leadbeater said.
Khan was determined to make this his last appearance before a court.
Mr Leadbeater said his hope was to be released from prison in time to celebrate his daughter’s first birthday.
Recorder Simon Myerson QC said: “This was on any view an atrocious piece of driving.”
He told Khan: “You are not a safe person to be in charge of a motor vehicle.”
It was the ninth time he had been caught driving while disqualified.
Recorder Myerson said the 14 month jail sentence gave Khan a good chance of being out on home curfew for his daughter’s birthday.
He was banned from driving for three years and until he takes an extended retest.
